Pre-Activity Orientation
When the participants register for the Sleep-In we will send
them a one page synopsis of the Conservation Conversation activity. This fact sheet will introduce the activity
and explain that they need to bring an object that represents conservation to
them. They also need to make a label
explaining the object and their relationship with it on a 4” x 6” index card. Participants should explain the following in
their label statements:
What is their object?
What is their relationship with the object? Explain how they came to own it.
Why or how does it represent conservation to them?
Activity Orientation
When the participants arrive at the Sleep-In event they will
submit their object. All of the objects
will be placed in a Pop-up Museum Exhibit with corresponding labels in Our
Leopold’s Shack. Participants can view
each of the items during other activities during the course of the entire
event.
Activity Facilitation
The Conservation Conversation will be facilitated by James Fischer (WMCC Staff), Jeff Greenwood (WMCC Staff), David Leff (CT DEP Deputy Commissioner Retired), and Mary Moulton (Leopold
Education Project, CT Rep.).
Encourage participants
to ask questions of each other about the objects brought in by the other
participants:
What is their object?
What is their relationship with the object? Explain how they came to own it.
Why or how does it represent conservation to them?
Examining the objects
and their stories for connections and similarities:
How do the objects differ, how are they similar?
What are our relationships with these objects?
How are they similar to each other?
Examining the objects
through a land ethic:
How do each of these objects relate to the land?
How do these objects foster your relationship with the land?
How do these objects foster your future relationship with
the land?
How do we foster a relationship with the land today, so that
future generations can appreciate the land?
Anticipated time allotment: 60 to 90 minutes
